UPDATE 11/7/24: Following yesterday’s Famitsu reveal, Arc System Works has released a first trailer for Double Dragon Revive, its 3D take on the long-running beat-’em-up series.
As per the accompanying English press release, Double Dragon Revive promises “renewed, stylish character graphics” with arcade favourites recreated in 3D, plus the “ultimate belt-scroll experience”, and “thrilling strategic action”.
“Experience the same simple and intuitive gameplay,” the studio writes, “with controls and balance refined for the modern era.” It adds Revive’s combat will require “adaptation and variety” and is “more than a simple button-masher”, encouraging players to “delve into the strategy by learning enemy patterns and finding the most effective attack timings.” There’s also promise of weapons and area gimmicks enabling players to “seize the upper hand in battle”.
Also of note, Arc has confirmed Yuke’s – the Japanese studio perhaps best known for its WWE games – will be developing Double Dragon Revive, while it handles publishing duties.
Double Dragon Revive is currently set to release for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam next year.
ORIGINAL STORY 10/7/24: Classic side-scrolling beat-’em-up Double Dragon is being reimagined in 3D by Arc System Works, the fighter-focused studio behind the likes of Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear.
Double Dragon (for those needing a quick history refresher) first made a splash in arcades back in 1987, and has seen numerous sequels, spin-offs, and crossover releases – for both arcade and home systems – in the years since. Arc acquired the rights to the series in 2015, and would go on to release Double Dragon 4 in 2017, albeit to a fairly lukewarm reception.
